Turffontein Primary hosts second annual Kajol Naidoo Human Rights Day Chess Tournament

Learners from various schools showcase their skills in a strategic showdown.

Turffontein Primary School hosted the second annual Kajol Naidoo Human Rights Day Chess Tournament on March 25.

This event lets learners from various schools and backgrounds participate and showcase their skills.

The primary schools that participated included Turffontein, Frances Vorwerg, Suidheuwels and Rewlatch, and Isizwe-Setjhaba High School also participated.

Turffontein Primary coach Eunice Makhanya said chess is a board game played for fun and a brain-nourishing game promoting discipline, focus, strategic planning and execution.

“With SA’s youngest chess champion, Kajol Naidoo, present, the winners played against her, and she played them concurrently, meaning she moved from one table to another, making chess moves.

“The participants received medals of participation. The winners received medals and trophies according to their rankings and age groups,” she said.

The school also invited institutional development and support officer Dion Mbadaliga of Circuit 1 Cluster 1 Jhb Central District (D14).
